Description:

Will Jesuit pitcher Mick Abel decide to skip college and go to the pros if he is selected in Round 1 of the 2020 MLB draft? The future star has signed a letter of intent with the Oregon State Beavers, but would things change if he landed on the right team? Photo courtesy Taylor Balkom. The 2020 MLB first-year player draft kicks off today as a select group of players hope to hear their names called during the five-round, two-day event beginning Wednesday, June 10 at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET on ESPN.• You can sign up to watch the 2020 MLB draft live for FREE with Sling TV (3-day trial, other promotional offers) or on Hulu Live (free trial). There are some changes to this year’s draft as the coronavirus has forced Major League Baseball to adjust their process for this year’s event. First, the draft will be just five rounds instead of the regular 40 rounds. Second, slot money will be identical to in 2019 and will remain fixed for 2021 as well. Lastly, following the end of the draft, undrafted players can sign with MLB teams for a maximum of $20,000. Jesuit High School senior Mick Abel is slated to be a first round selection and is currently rated the No. 11 best overall prospect in the draft on MLB.com. Only six high school players from Oregon have been selected in the first round in draft history, including just one in the last 43 years when Grants Pass left-hander Matt Smith was taken No. 16 overall in 1994 by the Kansas City Royals. Here’s a look at the latest selections from each Major League Baseball team on the board along with details about when each round takes place over the three-day draft process.
