PTE stands for “Pearson Test of English”. The Pearson Test of English is a computer-based English language test trusted by universities, colleges, and governments around the world. It offers candidates the best, fairest and most flexible way of proving their English language proficiency for studying or immigrating abroad. It is approved for all Australian and New Zealand student visa and migration applications. PTE is also, accepted by thousands of institutions in the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland, including universities like Harvard, Yale, and INSEAD. What are the main types of PTE exam? There are three types of PTE level tests which include PTE General, PTE Academic and PTE Young Learners. PTE General or Pearson Test of English General was previously recognized as London Tests of English General is a theme-based examination designed to test how well the candidate can communicate in English in real-life and genuine situations of life. The test is generally taken only for the purpose of improving the English language. Only a few countries accept the PTE General score for admission purposes. What are the eligibility conditions to take the PTE exam? There is no such specific eligibility criterion for taking the PTE General Exam. It can be taken by anyone interested to take it. Whereas PTE Young Learner can be taken by children between the ages group of 7 to 12. But for PTE academic, Students must be at least 18 years or older. If the student’s age is below 18 years, he/she need to produce a consent letter from their parents or guardian. What is the pattern of the PTE exam? PTE General Exams are conducted in two categories: Speaking and Writing. The written test is further divided into Listening, Reading Comprehension. PTE General Exam scores are calculated based on 6 levels of assessment: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 which are based on the CEFR i.e. The Common European Framework of Reference, grading system. Individuals must acquire C1 or C2 level fluency to apply for being able to be accepted at universities or ministries abroad. Unlike other English language proficiency tests, PTE Academic consists of a single 3-hour test session which includes three sections: speaking and writing (together), listening and reading. There are twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choices to essay writing and interpreting information. PTE exam is divided into 3 parts. What is the score pattern of the PTE exam? Scores for communicative skills i.e. listening, reading, speaking and writing, are based on all test items that assess these skills, either as a single skill or together with other skills. The range for each communicative skill score is 10-90 points. The range for each enabling skill score is 10-90 points. There two types of scoring in the PTE exam: correct or incorrect, and partial scoring. • Correct or incorrect: If answers are correct, a score of 1 score point will be given, but if they are incorrect, no score points are awarded. • Partial credit: Other item types are scored as correct, partially correct or incorrect. If answers to these items are correct, the maximum score points available for each item type will be received, but if they are partly correct, some score points will be given, but less than the maximum available for the item type. If responses are incorrect, no score points will be received. How to register for the PTE exam? Since there is no official website to send or submit your exam application for PTE General, it is recommended that one must get in touch with the customer care at Pearson Education Ltd. But to register for PTE academic you need to follow a few steps: • Visit the PTE Academic website for booking your exam slot and paying the PTE Academic fee. • Create a Pearson account. Enter the required details. Get registered. • Sign in with your Pearson account details which will be sent your preferred email within 48 hours. • Schedule your test by choosing your preferred location to undertake the exam and also by paying the PTE Academic fees. • A confirmation email will be sent to your email address with all the details of your PTE Academic exam. What is the fee for the PTE exam? PTE Academic exam fee for a single attempt is 163 USD +18% GST which means for Indian nationals it is approximately Rs.13,300/-.
